After World War 3 narrowly averted in January, Australia on fire in February, a deadly pandemic in March and widespread rioting following the unjust death of George Floyd in April, the year 2020 couldn’t end any sooner. If the first half of the year is anything to go by, the second half should be just as restful. <\/p>\n\n

Already weakened by a tense international trade situation, with the trio of the United States, China and North Korea engaged in a cockfight, the arrival of the health crisis delivered the final blow. <\/p>\n\n

Naturally, companies are turning to the web, where some are catching up with a thirty-year-old communications strategy as best they can. Very quickly, the subject of COVID makes the rounds of all the networks, and eyestrain sets in. It’s no longer the topic of the hour, it’s the topic of the minute. <\/p>\n\n

As soon as the news of George Floyd’s tragic death hit, it was as if COVID had disappeared. It’s a sudden gold rush for sympathy in a flurry of ostentatious virtue. One after another, companies try to prove themselves more committed than the other by proposing measures as effective as a sword in the water. <\/p>\n\n

These companies try to ride the wave of the moment, sometimes with the best of intentions. Unfortunately, as with the stock market, it’s too late by the time the curve has climbed to the top. The only way to make your company a winner is to plan for the future. Your next communications initiative shouldn’t capitalize on today’s trends, it should prepare for tomorrow’s. <\/p>\n\n

How do we do that? As I put together my latest “Demo Reel” compiling Machiavelli’s achievements over the past year, I realized that the key lies not in what we’ve accomplished, but what we have in store for tomorrow. The return won’t happen overnight, but I can guarantee that this time next year, we’ll be smiling as we think about 2020. We need to visualize ourselves in 2021. <\/p>\n\n

In short, I suggest we move straight on to 2021. Happy New Year! <\/p>\n\n
